DERBY RULES
What is Flat Track Roller Derby?
Roller Derby is an action-packed full contact sport and is one of the fastest growing sports in North America.
Games are played between two teams on an oval flat track. Each game is made up of jams where two teams skate and block against each other to try and score more points than the other team. The team that scores the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
A team fields five players at a time—one jammer and four blockers. The jammer tries to lap the opposing team to accumulate points. Blockers attempt to aid their jammer and prevent the opposing jammer from accumulating points.
What is a game?
A game consists of two 30 minute periods where two teams skate in jams that last up to 2 minutes. The team with the most points at the end of a bout wins.
What is a jam?
A jam is the two-minute period during which the action happens. The jam may last less than two minutes if the lead jammer decides to call off the jam. There may be any number of jams in a game.
What is a jammer?
The jammer is the only player on a team that can accumulate points and is recognized by the star on the helmet. The jammer scores points by lapping opposing team members.
What is a blocker?
A blocker is a skater whose job is to stop or block the opposing team's jammer from passing while also enabling their own team’s jammer to score. Typically, there are four blockers per team on the track, including the pivot.
What is a pivot?
The pivot is a blocker who may be converted to a jammer during the course of a jam. If the jammer's helmet cover (marked by a star) is correctly transferred to the pivot, the pivot becomes the jammer and the previous jammer becomes a blocker.
