Fresh Meat is a training program that will teach you the basics of roller derby skating. It will start (with skates!) on Sunday, September 18 and practice is once a week. New skaters will also want to take advantage of weekly "free skate" nights, where you can work on your skills at your own pace. Most Freshies will find they need to skate twice a week throughout the Fresh Meat program in order to pass benchmarks the first time, but go at your own pace! Lots of skaters take Fresh Meat more than once on their path to playing roller derby. We make it look easy, but it isn't. Once you pass your benchmarks, you can skate at league practices (runs January - October; $240/year plus $50 for insurance) and be placed on a house team.

We accept skating and non-skating officials all throughout the year. Contact us if you'd like to be an official.

To become part of our league as a skater, our requirements are:

  • Gear (helmet, mouth guard, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and quad skates)

  • CRDi insurance (available by filling out a form and paying the $50 yearly fee)

  • If benchmarked, pay league fees ($240/year)

  • If not benchmarked, go through our Fresh Meat program ($120; typically 16 wks) and pass your benchmarks (i.e., minimum skill requirements).

  • Contribute to the league with volunteer time. We are skater-run!

We are really excited about our league growing! In order to help you, here are a few suggestions:

  • Get your gear now! You can buy your gear online and there are lots of suppliers in Canada including our sponsor, RollerGirl and our friends at Nerd Roller Skates, or check out this used gear page on Facebook.

  • Skate wherever and whenever you can! There are a lot of places in the city where you can skate (walking paths, parking lots, skate parks, the Fieldhouse, your basement, etc.)

  • Please stick to the basics of skating. Work on balance, endurance and stability on your skates. We don't want you to hurt yourself before your tryouts, so please do not try any hitting, jumping or anything else that may cause injury.

  • Check out "how to skate" videos on YouTube.

  • If you are looking for someone to go skating with, just look us up on Facebook. A lot of girls skate outdoors in the summer and we would love for you to join us! Just send us a message or email and we will let you know the time and the place.

We want you to skate with us!
