The short, sweet version of Roller Derby:
Roller Derby is a full contact sport played between two teams in a "bout."
A "Bout" consists of two 30 minute periods, in which the teams skate as many 2 minute jams as the time allows. The objective of the jam is to score as many points as possible.
Points are scored by only the jammer from each team. The jammers attempt to infiltrate and pass through the "pack", made up of 1 pivot and 3 blockers of each team. The jammer gets 1 point for every opposing team member she passes.
How do I get involved?
Our next Fresh Meat intake will be in September 12th, 2010 from 6:30 - 9 pm at the Caledonian Curling Club, 2225 Sandra Schmirler Way (by the airport). Waivers will need to be signed upon arrival followed by a short Powerpoint presentation prior to tryouts, which entails completing 20 laps of the track within 5 minutes. Everyone must come with their own gear to participate.
Keep in mind that our practices are closed; therefore we are not able to have you come and watch. Only skaters, and referees are allowed at the practices. Because of the huge interest in Roller Derby we were forced to set certain requirements for new skaters to join our league. These Requirements are:
- You are able to skate
- You have your own gear (helmet, mouth guard, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, skates and funky socks/legwarmers are optional)
- You are able to successfully complete 20 laps in 5 minutes around the track (standard size of a track is 101' X 77'). That means speed, agility, stability, using crossovers and endurance.
We are really excited about our league
growing! In order to help you, here are a few suggestions:
- Get your gear now! We would suggest buying from one of our local derby girls and sponsor; Kitty Killswitch. She owns EOC Skates, an online roller derby gear website. Check it out at: www.eocskates.com
- Skate wherever and whenever you can! There are a lot of places in the city where you can skate (eg. walking paths, parking lots, skate parks, etc...)
- Please stick to the basics of skating. Work on balance, endurance and stability on your skates. We don't want you to hurt yourself before your tryouts, so please do not try any hitting, jumping or anything else that may cause injury!
- Check out "how to skate" videos on YouTube .
- If you are looking for someone to go skating with just look us up on Facebook. A lot of girls skate outdoors in the summer and we would love for you to join us! Just send us a message or email and we will let you know the time and the place.
- If you would like any input or information please feel free to contact Supertramp, our Fresh Meat Advisor, with any questions or concerns.
